Add to Wish List Add to Cart “Quartet, when mentioned in the context of concert music, is generally assumed to mean string quartet. In my case, the quartet that has played a central role in many of my pieces (besides the string quartet) is that of two pianos and two percussion [instruments]. The piece is one of the more complex I have composed. It frequently changes key and often breaks off continuity to pause or take up new material. Though the parts are not unduly difficult, it calls for a high level of ensemble virtuosity. The form is one familiar throughout history: fast, slow, fast, played without pause. The...(more)

Add to Wish List Add to Cart “Appalachian Spring” was composed in 1943-44 as a ballet for Miss Martha Graham on a commission from the Elisabeth Sprague Coolidge Foundation. It was first performed by Miss Graham and her company at the Coolidge Festival in the Library of Congress, Washington, D.C., on October 30, 1944.

The original scoring called for a chamber ensemble of thirteen instruments. The present arrangement for symphony orchestra was made by the composer in the spring of 1945. It is a condensed version of the ballet, retaining all essential features but omitting those sections in which the...(more)

This tape is available from the Boosey & Hawkes rental library. Alternately, the piece can be played by a Cello Octet. (There are differences in distribution of parts between the two versions.) The piece is in three movements: fast, slow, fast. The first and last movements are both based on a similar four-chord cycle that moves ambiguously back and forth between C minor and E-flat major. This harmonic cycle is treated extremely freely however, particularly in the...(more)

It fell to the son to complete the orchestration following his father's death in 2010. The impetus for the work came from the director of the Tansman Festival, birthplace of the naturalised French composer Alexandre Tansman.

The new edition includes the original German words (Schubart, Eichendorff), as many performers and audiences will prefer the songs in the original language. In his preface, Nicholas Clark, Librarian at the Britten-Pears Foundation, speculates on why the songs were set in English and on the possibility that the translator was Peter Pears, commenting that “the English language...(more)

Inherent in it are the following meanings: to hoodwink; to make ridiculous movements; to fool someone by means of feigned magic; to practice fortune-telling. The title refers to a Proustian moment I experienced – entirely unexpectedly – during my first sojourn in China: in 2008 and 2009 I visited Hong Kong and Guangzhou, among other places. The atmosphere of the old and poor residential neighbourhoods with their narrow, winding alleys, ambulatory food vendors, and market places – all this not far from supersized...(more)

Add to Wish List Add to Cart Chorale (2001-02), for orchestra, is a kind of musical meditation on the chorale Es ist genug from Bach's cantata O Ewigkeit, du Donnerwort, itself a harmonisation of J R Ahle's 1662 hymn. Nick Kimberley's preface outlines the context of the Bach original and refers to Alban Berg's use of the chorale in his Violin Concerto almost 300 years later. In contrast to both of these works, Lindberg's Chorale has no extra-musical agenda. The composer explains that he took the harmonic structure of the chorale and embedded it in his own harmonies. “I make an analogy with the rise and fall of the...(more)

The work consists of four orchestral tales – of night, fire, love and fate. Each aims to extract the essence of the phenomenon, not in a descriptive way but rather as perceived by the composer metaphysically, an approach akin to that of his series of “Angel” works. Although no exact narrative is intended, the final tale...(more)

Add to Wish List Add to Cart One of MacMillan's earliest successes was his first percussion concerto, Veni, Veni, Emmanuel (1992), firmly established with hundreds of performances to date. Percussion Concerto no 2 was therefore received with great excitement at its premiere in 2014 by Colin Currie and the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic. Like its predecessor, the second concerto is formed in a single, c25-minute span, albeit with contrasting sections, but with full orchestra scoring. The significant array of solo percussion is complemented by two orchestral percussion sections; notably the soloist makes use of a recently...(more)

Add to Wish List Add to Cart Commissioned by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Luzerner Sinfonieorchester, Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, and first performed in 2013 by Lawrence Power with the LPO, conducted by Vladimir Jurowski. Cast in three contrasting movements the work is expressive, energetic and highly virtuosic, culminating in a breathless Allegro pitting the soloist against the orchestra. A major addition to the canon of concertante works by this composer, and to the viola repertoire in general. Suitable for advanced standard performers.
